Sweet Grass Our Sacred Herb

Sweetgrass follows a long tradition of being a sacred plant... plant medicine... among Native American tribes.

Sweetgrass does not just live in North America though. I'm learning that it was also a part of my ancestors' lives in Europe and the Mediterranean. It can be found in moist meadows, stream banks, and areas previously cultivated as farmland.

For me, it is not so far fetched to believe that it might also have been found at the sacred wells of my ancestors. I'm planning on a painting with this concept.

I include sweetgrass in my ceremonies. I have always included it, even before I knew my family's history with it.

Regardless of the origin for the herbs and plants we use in ceremonies, we must attend to them in the most sacred ways possible. To create a relationship with our plant relations. Anything else disrespects the medicine. As I once heard in the movie practical magic, "You can't practice... while looking down your nose at it."
